HELP YOUR KIDS GET EXCITED ABOUT EYEGLASSES
Whether they see wearing glasses as “uncool,” are afraid that they’ll be looked at as “different” by other kids in class, or just aren’t comfortable, some children have an endless supply of excuses as to why they don’t want to wear their glasses.
At Standard Optical, we understand that it can sometimes be difficult to get your child excited about wearing eyeglasses. We have a few tips and tricks that can help!
Standard Optical can put your individual, customized prescription lens into nearly any frame for ideal performance sunglasses.
Give Them A “Glasses Role Model”
Wearing glasses is more common than your child may think. Approximately 4 billion adults wear glasses, and out of those 4 billion people, there is sure to be one glasses-wearing individual who your child will look up to. Whether it’s a celebrity, athlete, public leader, or simply a relative, giving your child a “glasses role model” can get them excited about using eyewear.
Here are a few public figures who are known to sport fashionable (and functional) eyewear:
- Selena Gomez
- Joe Jonas
- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
- Zendaya
- Laverne Cox
- Tom Holland
If it makes it easier, here are a few bespectacled fictional characters:
- Harry Potter
- Clark Kent (Superman)
- SpongeBob SquarePants
Gradually Transition Your Kids to Wearing Eyeglasses
Wearing eyewear can feel awkward at first, so it’s not unusual for kids to not want to wear their glasses all the time. When this is the case, we recommend that parents gradually transition their children to wearing their specs.
Ask your child to wear their eyeglasses for one hour a day for a week, and then two hours, and then three hours, and so on. This will help them slowly get used to wearing their glasses more and more, until wearing them is just a part of their daily routine. Many children will grow to prefer wearing their eyewear after a short time because they appreciate seeing the world clearly.
Let Your Kids Choose Their Own Frames
It may be hard to give your child creative control — especially when you can’t trust them to pick out their own outfit for the day — but allowing your child to pick out their own pair of glasses (or two!) will help get them excited about eyewear. In our experience, children are always more excited to wear frames that they picked out themselves, and with all of the children’s frames we carry, there’s no shortage of options.
