2023 Healthcare Tips for the Whole Family
Your eyes allow you to interact with the world around you and are a vital part of your daily life. By taking care of your eyes today, you are ensuring you will see your best for years to come. Let’s take a closer look at five reasons why routine eye exams are so important.
1. Eye exams help children succeed in school.
2. Myopia is becoming more common.
3. Vision screenings are never a substitute for a yearly comprehensive eye exam.
4. Glaucoma does not present symptoms in the early stages.
5. Annual eye exams can help detect other health issues.
During a child’s schooling, 80% of the information presented for learning requires good vision. By scheduling a yearly comprehensive eye exam, you’re making sure your child can see clearly and comfortably in the classroom. Even more, an eye exam is the only way to know for sure if your child is able to see their best for sports and other activities.
Standard hinges create a rigid, 90-degree angle between the temples and frame. If the temples are bent too far in the wrong direction, standard hinges can easily snap. On the other hand, spring hinges are more flexible, making eyewear more durable and better able to withstand the wear and tear kids put on their glasses.
But when it comes to younger kids, it may be best to get away from hinges altogether and get glasses that are all one piece! These wraparound frames are often better for very young children because they keep glasses snugly in place.
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is being diagnosed more than ever before, and at an earlier age too. Children who become nearsighted early in life tend to experience a worsening progression of the condition throughout childhood. This progression puts them at a higher risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma, and retinal detachment later in life. By scheduling a routine eye exam, your doctor can evaluate your risk of developing myopia. When detected early, you and your eye doctor can dramatically slow the progression of myopia and decrease the chances of developing eye problems down the road.
While commonly provided at schools and doctor’s offices, vision screening tests are not a replacement for a yearly routine eye exam. These tests can look to see if a vision problem exists, but they can’t be used to diagnose the problem. During a comprehensive eye exam, your optometrist will perform tests that completely evaluate your vision and eye health. And because your eyes are constantly changing as you age, routine eye exams are the only way to stay on top of your eye health and detect sight-threatening diseases before they can affect your vision.
Many people who develop glaucoma often don’t show any symptoms at first. These individuals usually develop vision loss before they ’ve even learned that something is wrong with their eyes. This type of vision loss is irreversible if caught too late. Fortunately, with a routine exam, your optometrist can detect high levels of eye pressure and other early signs of glaucoma before any serious damage to your vision occurs.
An eye exam can detect other health-related issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and even cancer. During your exam, your eye doctor will evaluate the condition of the blood vessels in your retina, which can help predict the health of the rest of blood vessels throughout your entire body. By scheduling a yearly comprehensive eye exam, you can reduce your risk for diabetes, hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia.
What People Say About Us
The staff here is amazing. We have always had a great experience and never have to wait long for our appointments. My husband and I will be coming to Standard Optical for years to come.

Standard Optical is by far the least expensive place to get glasses in Utah. I have priced them all (including Costco) and it is hundreds of dollars less for an examination and two pair of glasses. Don't believe me? Then call Standard Optical first and compare their prices with anyone else.
