What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye disease is caused by a low quality or quantity of tears, which prevents your eye’s surface from being properly lubricated. A healthy tear film is essential to maintain clear eyesight, and without it you can experience irritating side effects of redness, burning, watery eyes, eye fatigue, and even blurry vision. Dry eye is extremely common, but it’s more likely to affect those who are over 55 years old, wear contact lenses, frequently use digital devices, have had eye surgery, or have other eye health issues.
What Causes Dry Eye?
Tears consist of three layers: water, mucus, and oil. The disruption of any of these layers can lead to decreased tear production or increased tear evaporation, resulting in dry eye. These issues can be caused by age, hormone changes, allergies, autoimmune disease, eye surgery, or poor environment. The most common cause is issues with meibomian glands on the eyelids which produce oil for tears.
